How to Embrace Change
It’s no surprise that the majority of us hates change – I think it’s human nature for a lot of us. I believe that change can be very scary for most but I truly feel that change is necessary! When you learn how to embrace change, not only will it help you grow as an individual, but it will help keep you sane! I personally can’t stand repetitiveness and comfort, especially when there’s zero motivation. I itch for growth, passion and a true understanding of being present on a daily basis. Do you?
I learnt from a very young age the importance of setting goals and keeping busy. It may have helped that my parents sent me to Australia from Malaysia at the age of 11 and independence and holding myself accountable for everything was something that I had to learn pretty quickly. I’ve been put in many uncomfortable situations and couldn’t have asked for anything more. I absolutely enjoyed and embraced how much quicker I’ve grown compared to a lot of girls my age.
When I turned 17, I graduated from high school and got accepted into university and started dating a boy that ended up being my husband today (I do not take for granted that I’m a lucky woman!). We started travelling the world together and it truly opened my eyes to the world of possibilities. I’ve thought several times, “Surely life is supposed to be exciting, scary and fun all at the same time?” Life is meant to be LIVED! You shouldn’t be alive just to be alive – You need to LIVE. Are you truly living the life that YOU WANT? These are all thoughts that ran through my mind constantly (as an 18 year old!).
Since graduating university and having had the opportunity of travelling the world, I’ve since worked in corporate and start-up environments here in Australia, launched multiple digital platforms and have also lived in New York City (all before the age of 27)!
I understand that change is scary for most and there will always be critics or naysayers questioning your decision but when your heart is telling you “HELL YES”, you just go for it! No one knows your situation better than YOU! This advice doesn’t only have to relate to your career or a move across the country but for your own personal life! Have you built up the courage to ask for that promotion you deserve? Has it always been a goal of yours to live in New York City? What about London or Spain? Whatever it may be, CHANGE IS GOOD! And you will never know until you do it or you will live a life of regret – The choice is yours!
Sometimes you just have to bear down, power through and buck when you’re getting pushed against a wall. You have to teach yourself to see beyond the pushback and reluctance from anyone that is stopping you (or is trying to stop you) from doing what you truly want to do with your life. Whether that may be your boss, parents or friends. Don’t like your job? Leave! Want to travel the world? Save up and book some flights! Dreaming about living and working in New York City? Make the move! The great thing is, all of these scenarios are within YOUR control!
Look, you can either live your life being a sheep and follow what your parents or society has always done but if you’re itching to do something else or more, there is no better time than NOW! Know that if life doesn’t go according to how you dreamt it would, that is on you. No one else!
So ladies, here’s my challenge to you…I’d like you to write these questions down, date them and answer them truthfully. Put some thought and time into it and be honest with yourself. Set some goals! Answer some scary questions! And hold yourself accountable! After all, this is your life and you’re the one living it!
- What do you want to achieve 12 months from now?
- What does three years from today look like to you?
- What are you afraid of?
- What can you do to take the first step towards change?
I wish you all the best ladies! Remember, big wheels turn slowly! Sometimes the best things in life takes time, but a first move always needs to be made! Let’s start embracing change – Believe me, it’s great! xx
